  1. Sorry to sound ignorant, but what's a drag king?

  2. Excellent point!
And I'm pretty sure you guessed it.
As they explain on the site (and Gary herself told me), drag kings are women (in this case, self-described queer women) who dress up as men to perform in shows. In other words, it's the gender-mirrored image of drag queens (who are men, some of them gay, who dress up as women to perform in shows).

that sounds really awesome, I've nevr even heard of one being staged. I'll spread the word to all the drag-lovers.

Hey there! Let me start by saying, shame-faced, that I found this blog and entry by googling my own name!

    Thanks for plugging us Alexandre!

Just FYI, since a few of you mentioned not knowing much about drag kings:
-yes, drag kings are roughly a mirror opposite of drag queens, with the playing up up gender stereotypes etc, but it is a very different culture. There is a bit of mixing, but the queens who perform with us usually don't participate much in "mainstream" drag queen culture.
-some of us are genderqueer in our "regular" non-performing lives as well. For example, I am transgender and pack a softie (packing = having artificial male genitals in one's pants) almost daily, even to go to work and wear almost exclusively male clothes. Kinging then becomes a way to have fun with it and go all out.
-This is not a rebuke but just to let you know, for when you eventually encounter drag folks in real life, when we are in drag, we use gender-appropriate pronouns for ourselves. So instead of "Gary herself told me", it would be "Gary himself". Even offstage, when we are "in drag", we live our male personas.

Thanks again for the plug! Check out http://nouveauqueer.blogspot.com/ for a review. And check out www.myspace.com/garydickinson for info on future events, that I post on my blog there as they come up. Nothing in the near future but perhaps a Toronto gig in March.
